Pegleg Carignan 2020

R350.00 Member priceR315.00

Cobus Basson was a beloved young farm owner who lost his leg when a tractor overturned in the Carignan vineyard. Being a man of great spirit, he affectionately became known as ‘Houtbeen’ (Pegleg). This is our homage to him and the oldest Carignan vineyard in South Africa. Ideal for the drinkers on the hunt for a wine with enormous character and depth of flavour.

Dense ruby colour in the glass with aromas of red cranberry, dried fig and hint of liquorice. Succulent, smooth and juicy on the palate with flavours of dark red plums and a nudge of oak and a tart finish.

More details

The Grapes used for the Fairview Pegleg Carignan were sourced from the oldest Carignan vineyard in the country planted in 1981, the grapes were harvested from the Basson family’s bush vine vineyards, on the Swartland side of the Perdeberg Mountain. The vines grow on Malmesbury shale soils, which provide elegance to the grapes and sheer complexity to the final wine.

The grapes used in the Fairview Pegleg Carignan were hand harvested at 23.5 ° Balling, destalked, hand sorted and lightly crushed with 20% added as whole bunches to the bottom of the tank. Next, the grapes were fermented in a French oak foudres with regular pump overs. The wine completed malolactic fermentation in 3 rd to 5th fill French oak barrels, with further maturation for 11 months. Only the best barrels were selected, lightly filtered and bottled.
