Tasting Notes

Fairview Primo Pinotage 2023 glows deep ruby in colour. The nose opens with red plum, dark mulberry, and soft vanilla oak. Subtle notes of cocoa and sweet spice appear as the wine unfolds. On the palate, rich berry fruit meets firm yet polished tannins, creating a bold but balanced texture. The finish is long, dry, and savoury, revealing both strength and finesse. Complex and youthful, this South African Pinotage reflects Fairview’s dedication to craftsmanship and purity, offering a wine that is enjoyable now yet built to evolve beautifully over the next decade.

More details

Fairview Primo Pinotage 2023 is the estate’s benchmark expression of this proudly South African Pinotage. Crafted on the Fairview wine farm in Paarl, it comes from a single dryland bush-vine block planted in 1998. The deep duplex soils and laterite sub-layer store just enough moisture to sustain the vines through the dry season. Every summer, the team removes extra shoots and limits the crop to one or two bunches per vine. This careful work concentrates flavour and texture in every berry.

The grapes were hand-picked in early February 2023. After destemming and strict hand-sorting, fermentation started in open-top French oak foudres. The winemakers performed gentle punch-downs three times a day to build colour and structure. Once pressed, the young wine completed malolactic fermentation in French oak barrels. It then matured for 18 months, with a quarter of the barrels new. Each choice aimed to enhance depth without overshadowing the fruit — a signature of the Fairview estate style.
