Primo Pinotage 2021 from the Fairview wine farm is a rich, single-block South African red wine offering layers of ripe plum, red berries, and gentle oak spice elegant, balanced, and expressive.
Fairview Primo Pinotage 2021 shows a deep ruby-red colour with aromas of ripe plum, red berries, and subtle vanilla. The nose hints at sweet spice and soft oak, adding warmth and depth. On the palate, it’s smooth and full, revealing layers of juicy raspberry, liquorice, and gentle tannins. The texture is rich but balanced, finishing with a touch of savoury dryness that adds precision and poise. Elegant and expressive, this wine captures the essence of Pinotage as Fairview intends generous in flavour, structured for ageing, and crafted with attention to every detail from vineyard to barrel.
Primo Pinotage 2021 is crafted from a single block of bush vines growing on the Fairview wine farm in Paarl. Planted in 1998 under dryland conditions, these old vines produce fruit with remarkable concentration and texture. The deep duplex soils of sand and clay rest on a laterite sub-layer that naturally retains moisture, allowing the vines to thrive without irrigation. Careful canopy management and crop thinning ensure small, balanced yields, giving this wine its trademark intensity and finesse.
Harvesting took place by hand, followed by gentle destemming and sorting to remove any imperfect berries. Fermentation occurred in open-top French oak foudres, with manual punch-downs performed several times a day to build colour and structure. Once complete, the wine was basket-pressed and moved to French oak barrels for malolactic fermentation. It then matured for eighteen months, with forty percent of the barrels being new, achieving harmony between ripe fruit, spice, and smooth tannins.
