More details

The Beacon Shiraz 2014 (1.5L) Magnum comes from a dry-farmed vineyard planted in 1995 on deep Glenrosa soils. These soils retain moisture well and help the crop ripen early during Paarl’s long, warm summers. The north-west-facing vines grow as bush vines, pruned to three to five bearers per vine depending on growth. Careful summer canopy management reduces wind damage, while green cropping at 80% veraison ensures even ripening.

Harvest took place on 19 February 2014, about two weeks later than usual due to late-summer rain and cooler weather. The grapes were harvested at 25° Balling, then brought to the cellar in small lug boxes. After destalking and hand sorting, the fruit was placed into open French oak fermenters (foudres). Manual punch-downs were done three times a day, followed by a two-day post-fermentation maceration. The wine was basket pressed and completed malolactic fermentation in French oak 30% new barrels and the remainder in second and third fill. It matured for 20 months before bottling.
