The Bloemcool Berg-en-Dal Oupa se Wingerd 2023 celebrates 50 years of old-vine Grenache from Piekenierskloof. Bright red fruit, spice, and fynbos aromas meet a smooth, earthy palate.
In the glass, it shows vibrant cherry-red colour with aromas of berry fruit, fynbos, and spice. The palate is light-bodied yet full of complexity, offering layers of red fruit, subtle liquorice, and earthy tones reminiscent of rain-soaked soil. Smooth, grippy tannins give texture and length. Bloemcool Berg-en-Dal Oupa se Wingerd 2023 is proof that age brings grace, depth, and timeless flavour.
Bloemcool Berg-en-Dal Oupa se Wingerd 2023 comes from a Grenache Noir vineyard planted in 1973 on the Berg-en-Dal farm in the Piekenierskloof Valley. Now 50 years old, these dryland bush vines grow in soils shaped by sharp day–night temperature changes. The climate encourages slow, even ripening and healthy fruit, producing Grenache with purity, depth, and natural balance.
The vineyard team handpicked the grapes early in the morning, preserving freshness. They trucked the fruit, still cool, from Piekenierskloof to the Fairview cellar. Winemakers added 20% whole bunches to the bottom of the French oak foudre, leaving stems to enhance aromatics and structure. The rest of the berries were hand-sorted on top, then left to ferment naturally with indigenous yeast. Gentle punch-downs and pump-overs maintained balance between fruit and tannin.
After fermentation, the team basket-pressed the wine into barrel and aged it for 12 months. They then selected the finest barrels to capture the vineyard’s purest expression.
