Bloemcool Drie Papen 2023 is a small-batch Bordeaux-style blend named after three hills on the Darling farm that resemble the Pope’s mitre. Grapes were hand-sorted, fermented in foudres, basket-pressed, and aged in French oak with 50% new barrels. Only ten barrels were produced.

More details

Bloemcool Drie Papen 2023 combines Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot from Darling and Stellenbosch vineyards. The Cabernet Sauvignon was fermented as whole berries, with daily punchdowns during peak fermentation to build colour and structure. Each component was basket-pressed before moving to French oak barrels, where malolactic fermentation added depth and harmony. A careful barrel selection, including 50% new oak, brought richness and complexity, while still keeping the wine balanced.

In the glass, this wine shows a dark ruby colour. The nose opens with aromas of wet forest floor, fresh mint, ripe plums, and black cherry. Subtle notes of earthy sweet tobacco reflect its time in oak. On the palate, the wine is dense and rich, offering concentrated flavours of dark fruit and herbs. Chalky dry tannins provide structure, yet the style remains elegant and poised, typical of its cool-climate origins.

Bloemcool Drie Papen 2023 has the strength to age well over time. With a cellar potential of five to eight years, it can be enjoyed young for its fruit intensity or cellared for further refinement. Limited to just 2,484 bottles, this blend expresses both the character of its coastal vineyards and the craftsmanship that defines the Bloemcool range.
