The Bloemcool Oom Pinnes 2023 pays tribute to a well-loved Fairview colleague known affectionately as Oom Pinnes. He worked on the farm his entire life and often enjoyed Semillon, his favourite grape. The wine also honours Oom Pagel, a descendant of the Malawians brought to the Cape by the Dutch. His family has a long connection with Fairview, with several members still living and working on the farm.
The grapes come from Darling, where cool coastal conditions help Semillon keep its freshness and natural acidity. The fruit was handpicked early in the morning and delivered cold. The team whole-bunch pressed the grapes and allowed natural fermentation in 500L French oak barrels. The wine remained in oak for nine months before bottling, without stabilisation or filtration.
Oom Pinnes 2023 is bright and expressive. Citrus, honey, shells and brioche tones fill the nose, while gooseberry, citrus and gentle oak shape the palate. The wine finishes long and savoury, showing both purity and texture. It’s a beautiful example of South African Semillon and a proud addition to the Fairview wines family.
