The Fairview Caldera Vertical Case brings together the 2022 and 2023 vintages, with three bottles of each. Both wines ferment in open-top French oak foudres, with 20% whole bunches used for the Grenache Noir. The components mature separately for nine months before blending, giving each vintage its own expression of this Rhône-inspired red.
Fairview Caldera 2022 is bright red in the glass, with summer berries, fynbos and a hint of pepper. The palate is fresh and light to medium-bodied. Red cherry and spice meet subtle oak before a long, dry finish.
Fairview Caldera 2023 shows wild berries, herbal fynbos, pepper and a savoury touch. Fresh red cherry and spice follow on the palate, supported by subtle oak. The wine is light to medium-bodied, with a long, dry and pithy finish.
The Fairview Caldera Vertical Case offers an opportunity to explore two vintages of this Mediterranean-inspired Fairview blend side by side. Both draw fruit from distinctive vineyard sites, including Paarl Mountain, Darling and Piekenierskloof. However, each vintage brings its own blend to the glass.
The 2022 Caldera combines 45% Grenache Noir, 41% Shiraz, 9% Mourvèdre and 5% Cinsault. The Grenache comes from an old-vine Piekenierskloof vineyard and Stok-by-Paaltjie on Paarl Mountain. Meanwhile, the Shiraz includes fruit from cool-climate Darling and Fairview’s highest mountain site.
For 2023, Shiraz takes the lead at 58%, joined by 25% Grenache Noir and 17% Mourvèdre. Fairview selected the vineyard components for their spice and ability to shape an elegant Rhône-inspired blend. The vintage received Double Silver at the 2026 National Wine Challenge.
