Chakalaka 2022 reflects the heart of the Swartland wild soils, tough vines and a blend shaped by tradition. The six varietals grow as unirrigated bush vines rooted in deep koffieklip and oakleaf soils. Low yields of 2.5 to 4.5 tons per hectare give the fruit its focus and intensity.
The team hand-harvested the grapes from early February to mid-March. They destemmed and lightly crushed the fruit, then fermented it in open concrete kuipe with manual punch-downs. After fermentation, the wines moved to barrel for malolactic fermentation and ageing. Each component spent 12 months in seasoned French and American oak. Once blended, the final wine went back into old oak barrels to settle and gain harmony.
The result is a South African wine that balances bold fruit, spice and structure with elegance. Cranberry, red berries, cinnamon and clove weave together with savoury depth and soft cocoa notes. The tannins feel refined yet firm, giving the wine both presence and poise.
