Die Nagmuis Organic Bush Vine Syrah 2023 takes its name from the field mice that roam the Swartland. From koffieklip soils and organic bush vines planted in 2001, this Syrah shows deep colour, wild character and the untamed spirit of its rugged site.

Food Pairing

Pair with slow-cooked lamb, braised beef, fire-grilled vegetables, mushroom dishes or aged cheeses that complement its savoury spice and dark fruit.

Tasting Notes

The wine pours deep purple with a flash of burgundy like velvet at midnight. The nose shows savoury spice, plums and a hint of blackcurrant. The palate brings fresh red fruit, fine herbs and subtle oak in perfect balance. It’s elegant, with a little wild edge, just like the Swartland itself.

More details

Die Nagmuis Organic Bush Vine Syrah 2023 draws inspiration from the small field mice that scurry through the Swartland vineyards. They are harmless visitors who help the soil by digging holes and feeding on young shoots as cover crops grow. This Syrah reflects that same natural rhythm and rugged charm.

Block 7A was planted in 2001 on koffieklip soils. Most of the vines remain dryland bush vines, while two rows were later trellised for better exposure. In 2023, the block produced only 3.2 tons per hectare. Every grape was hand-pressed, highlighting the raw, untamed nature of the site.

The team harvested the grapes in March 2023. They destemmed and crushed the fruit in the cool morning air, then allowed a short cold soak to draw out deep colour. Fermentation kicked off naturally and the cap was managed by hand with solid punch-downs. After fermentation, the wine moved into old French oak barrels for a 10-month rest. Minimal filtration preserved its full character.
