More details

The Extraño 2019 blend celebrates Tempranillo’s place in the Cape. The grapes come from vineyards in Paarl and the Swartland, each adding its own character. Tempranillo and Grenache grow on Fairview’s slopes, where warm Mediterranean conditions help the fruit ripen evenly. The Carignan comes from old bush vines planted in 1981 in the Swartland, and the Grenache grows in a small shist pocket higher on Paarl Mountain.

The team harvested the grapes between late February and early March. They handpicked and sorted the fruit into open-top French oak foudres. For Grenache and Carignan, they added 20% whole bunches for extra lift. Daily punch-downs built colour and structure. After fermentation, they basket-pressed the wine and matured each component in French and American oak for 24 months, using 20% new oak. Only after tasting each barrel did they create the final blend.

The finished wine is rich, structured and packed with flavour. Red berries, plum and herbal notes lead the nose, followed by cocoa and savoury spice on the palate. Firm tannins give Extraño shape and longevity. It’s a striking red for fans of Fairview wines and fits beautifully into the style of South African Mediterranean-inspired blends.
