Extraño 2020 is a bold, full-bodied blend led by Tempranillo with Grenache adding lift and spice. Dark berries, warm spice and firm tannins create a savoury, Mediterranean-styled red.
Serve with mature cheese, charcuterie, tapas or chargrilled lean meats. It suits hearty, flavourful dishes.
Dark brick-burgundy in the glass. The nose shows dark berries, plum, warm spice and vanilla pod. The palate is full and brooding with red fruit, firm Tempranillo tannins and a dry, savoury finish that will age well for 5–8 years.
The Extraño 2020 blend showcases Tempranillo’s growing role in the Cape. The grapes come from Fairview’s vineyards in Paarl, where hot, dry Mediterranean conditions suit Tempranillo perfectly. The Grenache comes from a “stok-by-paaltjie” site higher on Paarl Mountain, rooted in a shist pocket among granite soils. This combination gives the wine depth, spice and a lifted red-fruit character.
The team picked Tempranillo between 18 and 21 February, and harvested Grenache on the 28th. They handpicked and sorted the grapes into open-top French oak foudres. For Grenache, they added 20% whole bunches to build extra fragrance. Daily punch-downs added structure, and after fermentation the wine was basket-pressed. Each component aged separately in French and American oak for 24 months, with 20% new oak reserved for Tempranillo. Only after tasting each barrel did the team assemble the final blend.
Extraño 2020 is dark, savoury and full-flavoured. Dark berries, warm spice, plum and vanilla shape the nose, while broody red fruit and firm tannins give the palate depth. It’s a generous, food-friendly red that shines at the table and fits beautifully into the character of Fairview wines and premium South African blends.
