Beacon Shiraz comes from dryland bush vines planted in 1995 on deep Glenrosa soils in the Swartland. These rocky, shale-rich soils force the roots to dig deep, creating small berries with great concentration. The vineyard faces north-west and ripens early in the season. The team manages the canopy carefully with topping and green cropping to ensure even ripening.
The grapes were picked on 11 February 2023. The bunches were hand harvested, sorted, and destalked. All underripe berries, stalks, and raisins were removed. Fermentation started naturally in open French oak foudres. Manual punch-downs and pump-overs happened up to three times a day. After fermentation, the wine stayed on the skins for two more days before basket pressing. It completed malolactic fermentation in French oak, with 35% new barrels and the rest second and third fill.
The wine spent 18 months in oak before the final barrel selection. It settled naturally and received only a light filtration before bottling. The result is a concentrated, structured Shiraz that forms part of the top tier of fairview wines.
