The white grape variety known as verdelho comes from the Portuguese island of Madeira. Additionally, this grape is becoming more and more well-liked in new world wine countries like South Africa and Australia. This type of wine, which is made in the classic Portuguese “Vinho Verde” style, gives consumers a crisp, refreshing, lower-alcohol wine with a surprising amount of fizz.
The free-run juice was left to settle for two days after the grapes were crushed and destemmered. After the clear juice was racked off, it was cold fermented in stainless steel tanks. After fermentation was complete, the wine was left on the fine lees for six months to add complexity before stabilization, filtering, and bottling. At bottling, a small amount of carbonation was carefully added to the wine to enhance the enjoyment of this lighter variety with a fizz.
