Tasting Notes

Intense dark red in the glass, this Shiraz opens with mulberry and liquorice. A hint of nutmeg adds spice to the nose. Dark fruit and savoury spices follow on the palate, while velvety tannins complete the wine.

More details

The Fairview Jakkalsfontein Shiraz 2013 forms part of our Vinoteque Collection, offering a special look back at an earlier Fairview vintage. It comes from the Jakkalsfontein vineyard near Malmesbury in the Swartland. The vineyard takes its name from a nearby spring, where black-backed jackals can still be heard at night.

Fairview planted these dry-farmed bush vines in 1997. They grow in deep, weathered shale soils that hold moisture during the hot Swartland summers. The vines produce small Shiraz berries with concentrated flavour.

For the 2013 vintage, the team selected only the best bunches. They hand-sorted the berries before fermentation in large open wooden vats. Regular punch-downs helped extract colour and flavour. Afterwards, the wine spent 20 months in French oak, with 40% new barrels. Finally, the team selected the best barrels for the final wine.
