Cobus Basson was a beloved young farm owner who lost his leg when a tractor overturned in the Carignan vineyard. Being a man of great spirit, he affectionately became known as ‘Houtbeen’ (Pegleg). This is our homage to him and the oldest Carignan vineyard in South Africa. Ideal for the drinkers on the hunt for a wine with enormous character and depth of flavour.

Food Pairing

Enjoy Fairview Pegleg Carignan 2020 with grilled poultry or dishes topped with Fairview Feta. It’s a smooth, expressive wine that reflects the heritage of its vines and the skill behind Fairview’s winemaking.

Tasting Notes

In the glass, the wine shows a dense ruby colour with aromas of cranberry, dried fig, and a touch of liquorice. The palate is succulent and juicy, layered with dark red plum and subtle oak influence. A crisp, tart finish adds freshness and lift, balancing the wine’s natural richness.

More details

Fairview Pegleg Carignan 2020 is made from grapes grown in South Africa’s oldest Carignan vineyard, planted in 1981. The fruit comes from the Basson family’s bush vines on the Swartland side of the Perdeberg Mountain. These vines thrive in Malmesbury shale soils, producing grapes that bring both elegance and complexity to the wine.

The 2020 harvest took place on 18 February, with grapes hand-picked at 23.5° Balling. After harvesting, the fruit was destalked, hand-sorted, and lightly crushed, with 20% whole bunches placed at the bottom of the fermentation tank. Fermentation occurred in French oak foudres with regular pump-overs to ensure gentle extraction of colour and flavour. Once fermentation finished, the wine completed malolactic fermentation in third to fifth fill French oak barrels, followed by 11 months of maturation. Only the best barrels were selected for bottling after a light filtration.
