Pegleg Carignan 2014 pairs perfectly with game and red meat. Try it with ostrich fillet, venison, or a rich lamb stew for a savoury balance. The wine’s spice and freshness also enhance tomato-based pasta or roasted vegetables with herbs. For a local touch, serve it alongside a platter of mature Fairview cheeses.

Tasting Notes

Fairview Pegleg Carignan 2014 shows a deep garnet hue and aromas of cherry, raspberry, and cracked pepper. The first sip reveals juicy red fruit with layers of spice and savoury depth. Silky tannins support the wine’s fresh acidity, while subtle oak adds polish and balance. As it opens, earthy tones emerge, reflecting the Malmesbury shale soils of the Swartland slopes. The finish is long, vibrant, and beautifully dry. This is a wine that combines structure with soul expressive now but built to age gracefully, showcasing the craftsmanship and heritage of the Fairview wine estate.

More details

Fairview Pegleg Carignan 2014 tells the story of resilience and dedication. Part of the Vinotéque Collection, it honours “Houtbeen” Basson, who helped his father plant South Africa’s first Carignan vineyard in 1972. At just seventeen, he lost his leg in a farm accident, yet his courage and humour inspired the name Pegleg a tribute to strength and spirit on the Fairview wine farm.

The grapes for this vintage came from old bush vines on the Swartland side of Perdeberg Mountain. These vines grow in Malmesbury shale soils that add natural complexity and elegance. On 18 March 2014, the fruit was hand-harvested, sorted, and lightly crushed before fermentation in stainless steel tanks. Regular pump-overs brought colour and flavour, while French oak barrels nurtured malolactic fermentation. The wine then spent twenty months ageing in oak, building structure, spice, and depth.
