Fairview Pegleg Carignan 2014 is part of the Vinoteque Collection, reserved for standout vintages with excellent ageing potential. The wine honours “Houtbeen” (Pegleg) Basson, who helped his father plant South Africa’s first Carignan vineyard in 1972. At only 17, a farm accident cost him his leg, but his humour and resilience inspired the name of this bold wine.
The grapes were hand harvested on 18 March 2014 from bushvine vineyards on the Swartland side of Perdeberg Mountain. These vines grow in Malmesbury shale soils, which give the wine its elegance and complexity. After careful sorting and light crushing, the fruit fermented in stainless steel tanks with regular pump overs. Malolactic fermentation followed in French oak barrels, where the wine matured for 20 months before bottling.
Pegleg Carignan 2014 bursts with red fruit, spice, and savoury notes. Fresh raspberry, cherry, and pepper create a lively palate with depth and balance. This wine is a natural partner to game, especially ostrich fillet, and will reward further cellaring.
