Tasting Notes

Deep red with touches of purple, this Pinotage opens with intense cherry and perfumed violet aromas. Underlying notes of smoky oak and sweet spice add another layer. Ripe plum and spice continue onto the palate. A firm structure gives the wine plenty of character and makes it worthy of time in the bottle.

More details

Fairview Primo Pinotage 2011 represents Fairview’s search for vineyards that allow Pinotage to show its true character. For this vintage, the team selected fruit from a property in Agter Paarl. They reduced the crop to one bunch per shoot in a prime section of the vineyard. As a result, the grapes developed greater concentration of flavour and texture.

The team hand-harvested the grapes on 3 February 2011. They then destalked and hand-sorted each bunch before fermentation. The wine fermented in open-top 500-litre barrels. Afterwards, it moved to French and American oak barrels for malolactic fermentation. Finally, the wine matured for 20 months in a combination of French and American oak. Forty percent of the barrels were new.
