The Fairview Primo Pinotage 2019 is a bold, structured red from dryland bush vines on Fairview farm, rich in dark fruit, cocoa, and spice with excellent ageing potential.
In the glass, Fairview Primo Pinotage 2019 shows a deep dark red colour with aromas of blackberry, plum, raw cocoa, and cinnamon spice. The palate is brooding and layered, offering dark fruit, savoury complexity, and bold tannins leading to a dry, confident finish. This wine shows great ageing potential and is a fine example of Fairview’s mastery of Pinotage.
Fairview Primo Pinotage 2019 comes from a bushvine vineyard planted in 1998 on the Fairview farm in Paarl. The vines grow under dryland conditions in deep duplex soils, a mix of sand and clay with a laterite subsoil that holds moisture naturally. These conditions, combined with careful vineyard management, produce grapes with intense flavour and structure.
During summer, the team removes excess shoots and reduces the crop to one or two bunches per shoot, depending on each vine’s vigour. This hands-on approach keeps the crop balanced and helps develop fruit with depth and texture.
The grapes were hand-harvested in early February 2020 at 25° Brix. After destemming and sorting, only the best berries went into open-top French oak foudres for fermentation. The cellar team performed manual punch-downs twice daily to extract colour and tannin. Once fermentation finished, they basket pressed the wine and transferred it to French oak barrels for malolactic fermentation.
