Fairview Primo Pinotage 2023 stands as the estate’s benchmark expression of Pinotage. The grapes come from a single dryland bushvine block planted in 1998 on deep duplex soils with a water-retentive laterite subsoil. Careful vineyard work shapes the crop: summer suckering removes excess shoots, and yields are reduced to one or two bunches per vine, which concentrates flavour and texture. Picked in several passes during early February 2023, the fruit delivered layers of complexity to the final wine.
Harvesting took place by hand, followed by destemming and strict hand-sorting. Fermentation occurred in open-top French oak foudres, with manual punch downs performed up to three times daily. After basket pressing, the wine moved into French oak barrels for malolactic fermentation, and then matured for 18 months, with 25% new oak enhancing depth and structure.
From this process emerges a Pinotage of power and finesse. The nose reveals ripe plum, mulberry, cocoa, and sweet spice. The palate brings concentrated fruit, firm tannins, and elegant oak influence. A dry, lingering finish ensures balance and sophistication. With cellaring potential of up to a decade, this is a wine made for collectors and connoisseurs alike.
