Chakalaka 2021 captures the spirit of Spice Route, bold flavours, rugged vineyards and a blend that speaks fluently of the Swartland. The six varietals grow as unirrigated bush vines rooted in iron-rich koffieklip and oakleaf soils. Low yields between 2.5 and 4.5 tons per hectare give the fruit remarkable depth and intensity.
Hand-harvesting began in mid-February and continued into late March. The team destemmed and lightly crushed the grapes before fermenting them in open concrete kuipe. Daily manual punch-downs drew out colour and structure while keeping the texture supple. After fermentation, each component rested in seasoned French and American oak for 12 months. Once blended, the wine returned to old barrels for extra finesse.
Named after the South African spice mix that celebrates cultural togetherness, Chakalaka brings harmony to variety. Deep fruit, spice, freshness and tannin all pull in the same direction making this one of the signature blends born from wine farms South Africa is proud of.
