The Spice Route Flagship Pinotage 2000 stands as one of the early benchmarks of South African wine from the Swartland. It comes from 25-year-old bush vines on Klein Amos Kuil, planted on deep red Malmesbury shales. These soils retain moisture naturally, allowing true dryland farming and producing small, intense berries. Cooling sea breezes and a south-facing slope helped the grapes ripen evenly while preserving freshness.
Harvest took place in February 2000. The small crop delivered only 2.8 tons per hectare, adding to the concentration seen in the glass. The wine matured for 17 months in French oak barrels from Demptos and Vicard, where it gained depth, spice and savoury notes that balance the fruit.
Today, the wine shows layers of red fruit, dried figs, banana, vanilla and gentle oak spice. The palate is silky, rich and structured, revealing tobacco and tar tones that add complexity. It remains a standout for fans of Spice Route wines, the Cape Winelands, and collectors who appreciate how gracefully Pinotage can age
