Spice Route Flagship Syrah 2005 is a deep, elegant Swartland red crafted from premium dryland vines on Rheeboksfontein. Rich spice, dark fruit and soft tannins define this refined and age-worthy wine.
Ideal with roasted lamb, grilled beef, venison, slow-cooked stews and earthy dishes. The wine’s spice and smooth tannins also suit charcuterie and smoky flavours.
The wine shows a deep, vibrant red colour. Aromas of cloves, cinnamon, subtle fruit and smoky notes lead the nose. The palate is elegant and understated with balanced oak and soft tannins. Black cherries, liquorice and restrained red fruit follow through to a long, rounded finish.
The Spice Route Flagship Syrah 2005 comes from vines grown on the south-facing slopes of Rheeboksfontein in Malmesbury. These vineyards sit about 150 metres above sea level, where cool night breezes help the grapes ripen slowly. The red ferric Oakleaf soils hold moisture well, which makes them ideal for dryland farming and concentrated fruit.
In February 2005, the vineyard delivered 6–7 tons per hectare. The team hand-picked the grapes at 26° Balling and sorted them carefully before fermentation. They used open two-ton oak fermenters and punched the skins down by hand every day. After fermentation, they basket-pressed the wine and moved it into French oak barrels for malolactic fermentation and eighteen months of ageing. Half of the barrels were new, adding structure and depth.
The wine shows a refined, elegant style. Cloves, cinnamon and smoky notes lead the nose, followed by black cherries, liquorice and gentle red fruit. Soft tannins support the palate, and the finish is long, rounded and smooth.
