Spice Route Mourvèdre 2023 draws its character from a single Swartland vineyard planted in 2001. These unirrigated bush vines grow in koffieklip and oakleaf soils and yield about 3.5 tons per hectare. The block is farmed organically and delivers small, concentrated berries packed with flavour.
The team harvested the grapes on 14 March 2023 at 22.5° Balling. They destemmed and lightly crushed the fruit, fermenting it in open concrete fermenters with regular manual punch-downs. Fermentation lasted seven days. After pressing, the young wine moved into seasoned French and American barrels to complete malolactic fermentation and begin its maturation.
Charl du Plessis notes that the dry winter pushed them to pick slightly earlier, giving the wine a fresher, fruitier profile. This vintage reflects that lift: bright red fruit, savoury spice, firm tannin and a youthful, energetic finish a modern expression of South African wine shaped by Swartland’s rugged landscape.
