This case includes six bottles of Spice Route Mourvèdre 2023, sourced from a single Swartland vineyard planted in 2001. Unirrigated bush vines grow in koffieklip and Oakleaf soils and yield around 3.5 tons per hectare. Organic farming and low yields produce small, concentrated berries with intense flavour.
The team harvested the grapes on 14 March 2023 at 22.5° Balling. They destemmed and lightly crushed the fruit before fermenting it in open concrete tanks. Regular manual punch-downs guided extraction during a seven-day fermentation. After pressing, the wine moved into seasoned French and American oak barrels to complete malolactic fermentation and begin maturation.
A dry winter led to slightly earlier picking, which brought added freshness and lift to the wine. The result is a modern, Swartland-driven Mourvèdre with bright red fruit, savoury spice, firm tannins, and a youthful, vibrant finish.
