Tarentaal Kwaal Organic Bush Vine Mourvèdre 2023 takes its name from the guinea fowl flocks that live among the Mourvèdre bush vines and surrounding shrubs. The wine captures the character of these dryland vines planted in 2001. They grow in a mix of koffieklip and oak leaf soils with a yield of about 4.6 tons per hectare. The block sits in a dry, rugged part of the farm within sight of the Amos Sauvignon Blanc vineyard, making it ideal for hardy bush vines.
The team harvested the fruit in March 2023. They fermented the grapes naturally in open-top concrete kuipe and punched down the cap twice a day. Partial whole-bunch fermentation added a lively burst of freshness. After fermentation, the wine moved to seasoned French oak barrels and matured for around a year. A light filtration prepared it for bottling while keeping its natural texture.
The final wine shows rich dark fruit, gentle spice and Mourvèdre’s earthy, savoury depth, all carried by silky tannins. It remains unmistakably Swartland expressive, grounded and free of excess weight.
