Tarentaal Kwaal Organic Bush Vine Mourvèdre 2022 takes its name from the guinea fowl that roam the Mourvèdre vines and the surrounding shrubs. The dryland bush vines, planted in 2001, grow in koffieklip and oak leaf soils. They yield about 4.6 tons per hectare. The block sits in a dry, rugged part of the farm and looks out toward the Amos Sauvignon Blanc vineyard.
The team harvested the grapes on 14 March 2022. They fermented the fruit naturally in open-top concrete kuipe and punched down the cap twice each day. Partial whole-bunch fermentation lifted the wine with a burst of freshness. After fermentation, they moved the wine to seasoned French oak barrels and let it mature for about a year. A very light filtration prepared it for bottling.
Charl originally planned to bottle only 100 bottles for a special dinner. As he tasted the wine through maturation, he discovered a mix of salty, savoury and juicy berry flavours that kept growing in complexity. He chose to bottle just over 1,000 bottles instead.
